REFRESH partner ETAT9 is presenting a poster at the WindEurope Annual Event 2025 in Copenhagen.

The three-day event on 8-10 April includes a conference featuring more than 350 speakers and an exhibition showcasing over 500 countries. More than 200 posters will also be on display covering a diverse range of research topics.

ETAT9’s poster will focus on the company’s solutions for cutting end-of-service wind turbine blades developed as part of the REFRESH concept for the smart, circular recycling of blades.

TITLE: Cutting end-of-life wind turbine blade on-site in a sustainable approach before recycling or re-use

ABSTRACT: As part of the REFRESH wind turbine blade recycling project, we carried out an on-site test cutting three blades from a wind turbine. The method developed in the design phase was validated and optimised during the full-scale test phase on this experimental site.

In this poster, we explain how to cleanly cut a wind turbine blade ensuring the health and safety of workers and reducing impact on the environment. Based on the extensive data collected on site we propose an effective and realistic solution.

The experience outlines the comprehensive approach taken to dismantle wind turbine blades efficiently and sustainably. It shows three main parts:

  • Cutting technologies: the selection and use of advanced cutting techniques, including diamond wire saws and diamond circular saws mounted on excavators. These technologies were chosen for their precision, low environmental impact, and efficiency.
  • Dust control and measurements: the methods implemented to manage and minimise dust emissions during the cutting process. Optimised irrigation systems and on-site dust measurements ensured compliance with safety and environmental standards, protecting both operators and the environment.
  • Water recycling processes: the treatment and recycling of water used in the cutting operations to prevent overheating and dust dispersion. The water recycling system involves collection, filtration, and reuse, significantly reducing water consumption and environmental impact.

According to WindEurope, the theme for this year’s event – Scale Up, Electrify, Deliver – reflects the most urgent priorities for the wind industry – and the steps needed to put wind at the heart of Europe’s competitiveness:

  • Scale-up: Building a robust supply chain, boosting Europe’s clean tech manufacturing, and creating a resilient energy system.
  • Electrify: Cutting energy costs, matching grid buildout, creating demand for low carbon products, and using state aid to electrify industrial processes.
  • Deliver: Creating a good business case for wind, a good auction design, good system planning, and a better permitting regime.

With 15,000+ attendees, the whole wind value chain will be well-represented at the event.
