Owens Corning’s Glass Reinforcements business has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Gjenkraft AS, a Norwegian innovator in thermolysis-based recycling technology and reverse logistics for composite waste, to jointly develop scalable, circular economy solutions for post-industrial composite waste.

The collaboration will focus on integrating the high-quality recycled fibers recovered by Gjenkraft’s process into Owens Corning’s glass fiber products, helping close the loop for advanced materials. Gjenkraft’s technology uses a thermal process (known as thermolysis) to break down composite production scrap into valuable raw materials which can then be reused in the collaboration between Owens Corning and Gjenkraft. This creates an opportunity to drive the reuse of composite waste, reduce landfill contributions, and provide manufacturers with innovative ways to recycle and repurpose these materials.

The agreement outlines several key objectives for the Owens Corning-Gjenkraft collaboration, including:

  • Optimizing materials: Refining methods to incorporate recycled glass fibers from Gjenkraft’s process into Owens Corning’s production streams for glass reinforcements.
  • Scaling recycling technology: Accelerating the industrialization and scaling of Gjenkraft’s thermolysis recycling technology to make composite waste processing more cost-effective and efficient at an industrial scale.
  • Building circular systems: Developing end-to-end circular economy systems capable of managing composite materials throughout their entire lifecycle – from collection of manufacturing waste (via reverse logistics) and recycling.

“Our advanced recycling approach – using thermolysis – is transforming how composite waste can be managed, converting it into valuable secondary raw materials for industry,” said Arvid Lønne, co-founder of Gjenkraft AS. “Collaborating with Owens Corning is a key step forward in demonstrating that recycled composite materials can be reintegrated into a variety of products. It gives us the opportunity to scale up our technology and make a meaningful sustainability impact across many industries.”

“We’re committed to reducing our environmental footprint, and this collaboration brings us one step closer to that goal,” said Dr. Chris Skinner, Vice President of Strategic Marketing and R&D for Owens Corning’s Glass Reinforcements business. “By incorporating recovered and recycled glass fiber into composites materials, we can demonstrate the real-world circularity of composites. This enables us to provide our customers with the solutions they need to meet growing regulatory and consumer demands for recycled content.”
