Wind turbine blade repurposing and recycling solutions

As an EU-funded project managed by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA), REFRESH is supporting the sustainable growth of Europe’s wind energy industry by developing innovative strategies and technologies to advance wind turbine blade circularity.

Over the past 4 years, REFRESH has been optimising and scaling up sustainable repurposing and recycling solutions, covering the whole value chain from end-of-life blades to new products. Comprehensive LCA and LCC analyses and a novel blockchain traceability platform support the project’s approach.

During the Closing Event, the project partners will present their achievements and discuss the exploitation potential of the technologies developed.

Presentations will cover:

  • Blade preparation for repurposing & recycling – smart cutting (ETAT9), shredding & sorting technologies (MTB);
  • Blade recycling technologies – mechanical (Gees Recycling), thermal (Gjenkraft) & microwave-assisted recycling (CIRCE), valorisation of dust (Enecolab);
  • New products from EoL blades – repurposing strategy & products incorporating secondary materials (CETMA, TECNALIA), industrial validation (ACCIONA);
  • Traceability & sustainability – blockchain traceability platform (TECNALIA), sustainability analysis of processes & products (RINA).

How do we convert REFRESH research into market impact?

The afternoon session will be dedicated to Q&A and discussion. It will include the panel discussion End-of-life as a value stream: how do we convert REFRESH research into market impact?, where guest speakers and REFRESH partners will explore the next steps to maximising the project’s results.

The full programme will be published soon.
